"UP NEPA" a poem by a Graduate of Rivers State University Benaiah Worika.

UP NEPA!

The night has just arrived,
Being succulent & young.
The day's peril we all survived,
To the hope of the morrow we clung.
Under the effulgent stare of the moon
We sat, some here some there
For fear of being roasted soon
By the unkind hot indoor atmosphere.
But the cruel whining mosquitoes
Seem to distract our loyalty
From the little, so little calm tornado
Dashing its coolness around the vicinity.

UP NEPA!
We fled into uproar
As the electric sun arrived with a flash.
Old, young & kids
Flung their hands into the air
As if to worship a supreme deity.
The streets got busy,
Hither & thither we ran,
Singing unrehearsed songs.
Even the still objects chanted for joy ;
The stabilizer clicked,
The A.C buzzed,
The refrigerator hummed,
The ceiling fan squeaked,
The bulbs glowed
Whilst it bellowed songs of jubilation in silence,
All sang it's welcome song
For the visitor that had emerged.
Helter skelter we galloped,
Into our abodes
To engage this visitor.
UP NEPA! UP NEPA!

As the years hurry by,
And bring it's unseen moments into being
UP NEPA shall be a stuck fellow
To the lips of every citizen.
An INHERITANCE!

When would it seize
To be part of our future?
Instead, to be made a tale.
One to be told
To our children's children,
They who should see a better day.
UP NEPA!
